There has been a prison on this site since 1793 where it used to be a medieval goal called The Dana, it is still sometimes called The Dana today. The present building on the site was built in 1877 and is a grade 2 listed building. The prison took both male and female convicts up until 1922 where it became just male.Between the years of 1902-1961 7 people were executed by hanging, inside the prison walls, for murder, they were all buried in unmarked graves inside the prison. In 1972 10 of the previously executed inmates had their graves exhumed from the prison, cremated in the nearby crematorium and then had their ashes scattered in the prison. In Sept 2004 an enquiry was launched into the amount of suicides that had occured. This came after 3 inmates had hanged themselves within the space of 2 weeks. In March 2013 the prison was closed. It has plans to be turned into flat and accommodation for students.
The spirits that reside at Shrewsbury are still unknown to us as not many investigations has taken place inside the prison and not much information has been collected. It does not fall short of its unusual happenings with banging noises going off in the corridors, cell doors slamming shut and people wailing. People have also seen someone looking out of the execution window.
We get to investigate many areas on our visit including, A wing, the vunerable prisoners wing, the long corridors, execution areas, the hanging room, the kitchen and many of the cells.
Come and experience something that has not happened before.
